Quilt-As-You-Go Civil War Potholder Quilts

GUILD LECTURE

This Quilt-As-You-Go lecture will focus on the history of and the techniques used in making the “Potholder” quilts during the Civil War.  This method of quilting is still applicable today for finishing up all of those unfinished blocks that most quilters have stored away somewhere and for completing community service projects.  The lecture includes a short PowerPoint presentation and a trunk show of some quilts that were finished using this technique.

WORKSHOP

Goals:

  • We will spend the first hour reviewing the machine quilting techniques we use:  basting the layers, supplies, quilting with a walking foot, free-motion quilting and quilting with rulers.

  • The rest of the time will be spent on learning the Potholder techniques for completing the blocks you bring from home.
