Underground Railroad and Quilt-As-You-Go Civil War Style

As mentioned earlier, the Kackling Kousins were at Hoover's Bernina Sew in Mifflinburg June 19 and 20, 2023.  On Monday, the Underground Railroad Block of the Month Class met for their fourth class.  This group is outstanding, and their blocks are beautiful.  Each participant has now completed eight of the twelve blocks.  Take a look at the Log Cabin blocks and the Shoo-Fly blocks.  

  

   

On Tuesday, the Quilt-As-You-Go (QAYG) Civil War Style Class was held at Hoovers.  We began with the history of the Civil War QAYG technique.  This technique is also known as "Potholder" quilting originating in the New England states (mostly Maine).  The oldest surviving quilt was documented at 1837, which definitely pre-dates the Civil War.  The ladies that attended the class brought quilt blocks from home, sandwiched them with batting and backing, quilted them and then put them together using the Civil War QAYG technique.  It was a great day and their blocks turned out beautiful! It's a great day to be alive when you are sharing and quilting with those that love the same things you do!  Take a look!

Underground Railroad Sampler Quilt

The Underground Railroad Sampler Quilt by Eleanor Burns (aka Block of the Month with the Kackling Kousins at Hoovers) has reached the halfway point.   All class members have completed the first six of the twelve blocks. We are having so much fun and the class is working very hard to produce quality blocks that will be ready for quilting after the last class in September.

Kackling Kousins' Patchwork

Periodically, the Kousins will have a Patchwork Post (aka a hodgepodge of information regarding their current and upcoming activities).

• The Kackling Kousins are enjoying their time at Hoover's Bernina Sew in Mifflinburg, PA.  Hoover's classroom is absolutely amazing.  If you are unable to bring your machine to work on projects, Hoover's have been very accommodating by setting up a machine for you to use.  Also, it is nice to participate in a class and have an entire store available at your finger tips..  The Hoover Family is friendly, helpful and most of all obliging about your sewing needs
   
• Free-Motion Quilting Class - Do you have a BSR (Bernina Stitch Regulator) that came with your machine?  Have you opened the box and taken advantage of the amazing features it can offer?  If not, come and join the Kousins on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, for a fun day of exploring free motion quilting.  We will be practicing many different free-motion designs.  Call Hoover's to register today at 570-966-0122 to receive the instructions for the class.

Underground Railroad Sampler Quilt BOM/Machine Quilting with Rulers

The Kackling Kousins were at Hoover's Bernina at the beginning of the last week to continue the Eleanor Burns' Underground Sampler Quilt Block of the Month.  During this class we focused on the Wagon Wheel and the Bear Paw blocks.  The group is becoming very efficient with the 1/4" seam allowance, half-square triangles, and squaring up the pieced squares so that the blocks fit together perfectly.  Next month's focus will be on the Basket and Crossroads blocks.

On Day 2 at Hoover's Bernina the Kackling Kousins offered the Machine Quilting with Rulers Workshop.  Each class member brought a simple quilt block, which they assembled at home.  We feel it is very important to learn ruler work on a quilt top that actually has seams and ditches.  Everyone worked diligently to try the rulers and come up with custom quilting designs.  A demonstration was also given on how to do a faux-piped binding.

Spring Fling Presented by Hoover's Bernina Sew LLC

The Kackling Kousins attended the SPRING FLING held at the Rusty Rail in Mifflinburg, PA 

presented by Hoover's Bernina Sew LLC.  It definitely was a sewing, serger, quilting, embroidery extravaganza!  We were there 3 fun-filled days which included:

• shopping, 
• giveaways, 
• door prizes, and 
• five classrooms with leading educators (all materials were included)  

The SPRING FLING Goodie Bag, that was given to each registrant, was amazing as well.  Take a look at the moments we captured below.  If you didn't attend this year, make sure you watch for SPRING FLING 2024!  It is truly spa sewing days just for you (morning snacks and boxed lunches were provided all three days--you don't need to bring a thing!)
