Machine Quilting with Rulers

The Kousins spent the day at Hoover's Bernina Sew on Tuesday, September 19, 2024 teaching a class on Machine Quilting with Rulers.  As Amanda Murphy says, "Quilting with rulers is free motion quilting with training wheels."  Quilting with rulers can be done on a longarm machine or domestic sewing machine.  Ruler work helps create accurate quilting across a quilt.  Quilting rulers give you a precise quilting pattern.  Combining ruler work with free motion quilting is a "show stopper."  The designs you can create are endless.

Thanks for a great day ladies!

FINAL Class of the Underground Railroad Sampler Quilt (by Eleanor Burns)

On Monday, September 18, 2024, the students enrolled in the Underground Railroad Samper Quilt (by Eleanor Burns) block of the month attended their last class. The Kousins were extremely proud that all nine members of the class completed all 12 quilt blocks.  This group of ladies were truly a pleasure to work with and teach.  We shared so many quilting techniques, but above all else, we shared the joy of the soul, laughter!  Thanks, ladies for a great class!

This and That From the Kackling Kousins

The Kackling Kousins took the month of August for some R&R at the Centre County Grange Fair in Centre Hall, PA.  There is nothing better than handwork sewing in the evening at your campsite enjoying the sites and sounds of the Fair.

However, here we are now in the middle of September 2023 back into creating, sewing, and teaching.  This past week we were in Brookhaven, PA near Philadelphia.  We provided a lecture on the "Quilt-As-You-Go Civil War Potholder Quilting."  The Undercover Quilters are a great group and were extremely engaged in the Civil War QAYG technique.  Thanks for having us!

Underground Railroad and Quilt-As-You-Go Civil War Style

As mentioned earlier, the Kackling Kousins were at Hoover's Bernina Sew in Mifflinburg June 19 and 20, 2023.  On Monday, the Underground Railroad Block of the Month Class met for their fourth class.  This group is outstanding, and their blocks are beautiful.  Each participant has now completed eight of the twelve blocks.  Take a look at the Log Cabin blocks and the Shoo-Fly blocks.

On Tuesday, the Quilt-As-You-Go (QAYG) Civil War Style Class was held at Hoovers.  We began with the history of the Civil War QAYG technique.  This technique is also known as "Potholder" quilting originating in the New England states (mostly Maine).  The oldest surviving quilt was documented at 1837, which definitely pre-dates the Civil War.  The ladies that attended the class brought quilt blocks from home, sandwiched them with batting and backing, quilted them and then put them together using the Civil War QAYG technique.  It was a great day and their blocks turned out beautiful! It's a great day to be alive when you are sharing and quilting with those that love the same things you do!  Take a look!
